Sugar cravings

I've been off sugar. But sometimes the cravings just kick in and I give into them. I'm curious to know why the cravings even happen in the first place.. it's also not fair that for some people just dont crave for any sugary stuff compared to others (like me) Why so?

Hi Madhav! The basic reason why we get sugar or any cravings is because these food items are somehow related to happy & joyful moments of our life, which produces happy hormones like serotonin in our brain. For example- we eat sweets at functions or gatherings. Sometimes our brain needs a serotonin boost especially when we are stressed or feeling down, & since these foods are related to serotonin production our brain uses its memory & makes us want to have these. Now let's use another example- some people crave savory things like chaat ,pizza, panipuri etc. The reason is simple, they have happy memories related to them. Their brain remembers these savory items for serotonin boost. Also everyone has a different taste palate.

While relishing sweets sometimes is just ok, a craving of the same can be an indication by your body that it is running low on some nutrient. Many a times it can be protein. So, do consciously check on your diet for the protein intake !! If you are taking less, try stepping it up for at least a week to 10 days & see if you feel a reduction in the sweet cravings !!
