Yoga during pregnancy
How is prenatal yoga different from “regular” yoga?
As the joints are naturaly a bit over-flexible and susceptible to injury during pregnancy, it is recommended to avoid practices that put pressure on joints such as HIIT workout/dance that involves a lot of jumping. It is also recommended to avoid sudden/jerky movements that might cause abdominal trauma such as double leg raises, straight toe touches etc.
A normal Yoga class can include movements that are contraindicated for pregnant women, such as twisting practices, deep forward/backward bends, core activation practices such as supine leg raises, heating breathwork practices that contracts the belly. In fact, throughout a "normal" Yoga class a practitioner is expected to keep the core activated by engaging the pelvic floor and surrounding muscles, which is again, restricted during pregnancy duration. Hence, it is always safe to practice Yoga under expert guidance during pregnancy which is designed to be beneficial for the lady and not the other way round.
